Quick Kroger Trip
Went to Kroger to pick up some milk, bread, and see what was happening.
Ended up getting in on the Mega Event - total before Q's was $97.19 - total after was $51.29. Savings was 48%. Not the best trip ever - but I didn't spend $45.00 I would have otherwise - so........... good enough for me!
Problem is I haven't been to the store in 3 weeks (well except out in California) so there was very little here except my regular stockpile items (cereal, pasta, chips, etc.) ((a 20 year old home alone for 2 weeks can clean out a freezer! LOL)), so it's hard to save a bunch and restock at the same time! I, however, am very happy with 48%!!

How To Reduce Electricity Costs
I've been struggling for years with high electric bills. I have a 3,000 square foot home with 6 bedrooms. Yes - that's somewhere between 5 and 7 people in the house at all times, with up to 7 different televisions running, computers running, etc. This year I decided to really take a look at what is eating up the electricity in my home and do something about it.
While I haven't saved 90% on my energy bill, and don't expect to, I have saved a great amount of money this year along with just a few small changes.
1) Turn off the lights! Ya I know - sounds easy and we all know this one. Reality - we leave lights on all the time. In my house the kids were not in the habit of turning out a light when leaving a room - I'd go around at night and turn off all the lights, leaving a "night light" on for them (which was really a hall light with a 15 watt bulb in it). We've made a conscious effort to turn out lights when we leave rooms, and to not turn them on just because we walk in a room, but to turn them on when we really need them.
2) Unplug chargers when you're not charging. A charger plugged into a wall, with no appliance on the other end charging, still draws electricity. While it is a small amount, if you add up all the chargers around your house it adds up quickly. I had 7 phone chargers, 3 laptop chargers, and 2 ipod chargers plugged in the day I first went checking - all with nothing attached to them.
3) Use power strips to turn off power to televisions, stereo equipment, computers, etc. when they're not in use. Even though they're off, the standby power consumption can be equivilent to a 75 - 100 watt light bulb running continuously.
4) Watch that thermostat! I installed a programmable thermostat that regulates the temperature in my home. It's set to 70 during hours that we're home in the winter, and 66 during hours we're away or asleep. During the summer it's set to 75 for hours we're home, and 78 for hours we're away.
5) Got a waterbed? Keep it covered! Keeping a cover on your waterbed will keep the heat from escaping into the room, leading to less time the heater needs to run. This was a costly mistake for me - I purchased a waterbed for my 20 year old who never makes a bed. Needless to say the very next month the electric bill showed a noticeable climb. After that he learned quickly to make his bed when he's not in it.
6) Use shades and blinds. In the winter open them during the day to let the sunlight naturally warm the house. In the summer close them during the day to avoid raising the temperature.
7) Check the seal on your refrigerator/freezer. Make sure it's sealing tight and not leaking cold air out of the appliance.
8) Wash only full loads in the dishwasher.
9) Set the water temperature on your washer to cold. I only change mine to hot when I'm washing whites - everything else is set to cold. This avoids paying for running the washer, and the hot water heater.
10) Set the hot water heater to 120 degrees. This not only helps reduce energy costs, but will help reduce the risk of serious burns.
I'm saving well over $50 a month on electric charges now, and an additional $50 - $75 on gas charges. That's a huge savings over the course of a year that was literally "money out the window" previously!

I'm trying to find something more "appropriate" for my coupons (i.e. something that will hold all of them so I don't have to look like a freak when I walk in a store and get the "dirty looks") and found these awesome Case-It

How do you save while on vacation
It's true - I carry my coupons with me where ever I go. My husband thinks I'm crazy, however I pack them up carefully so I know when I get to where ever it is they're still going to be in the appropriate place in their binder.
I have the kids in California right now on vacation for 2 weeks. We got here the night before last. Yesterday alone I went to the grocery store and saved 60% with my coupons, and then we decided we wanted Baskin Robbins, and I had coupons for that!
Today we're headed to Six Flags - yes I have a coupon!
What are some other ideas for saving money while on vacation?

Shopping Online
Traditionally I do the good majority of my Christmas shopping online. To me it just makes sense. 1) I have almost no time to go walking around a mall for hours on end looking for the perfect gift, 2) while I really enjoy the company of a good friend and meeting new people - the mall around the holidays is not my cup of tea (I hate pushing, shoving, and rude people), and 3) I can shop multiple stores for the same product, find the best price, and get it shipped to my door in a matter of minutes.
I've bought some of the best gifts ever from e-bay, and they're not always "new". I have often bought refurbished products, or delicately used items, and used them as gifts. (with 7 kids you learn to be frugal really fast if you want to enjoy other things in life, like new cars or vacations)
While e-bay is probably one of my favorite sites of all time, I also shop big box stores (Kmart, Walmart, Sears, etc.) online as well. I have ran across some of the best deals ever on sites I hadn't heard of before the day I found my deal.

Why is my bag so darn heavy?
Could be all that loose change thrown in the bottom!
My husband will tell you that I carry a small suitcase. The reality is I carry a very modest size bag, which right now happens to be a Coach that I got on clearance for 70% off the regular price. (yes - I broke down and paid more than $30 for a bag - but it made me feel good!)
The issue I have is the change that I inevitably toss into the bottom of my bag to never reach for again! I'm horrible - I will not search through the bottom of my bag for the correct change to make a purchase. I have also not instilled that quality in my children, so you'll find loose change on the kitchen counter, in the couch cushions, on the bathroom counter, on top of the dryer (heck sometimes there's even dollar bills in there), etc.
So what do you do with all that change? My husband has the same issue.
For those of you that don't already know - we live in separate States and manage 3 households. I live in Michigan with the 7 kids, of which 3 are still in middle school, 1 is in college, 1 is married with a baby of his own, 1 lives on his own, and 1 has joined the service and will be going to basic training in less than 120 days. My husband is active duty Air Force, with 20 years of service, and will retire in November of this year. He is stationed in California presently - so I'm here keeping my career, he's there waiting on retirement, and we own a home in Alaska that we currently rent out.
So back to the change........we both seem to be careless when it comes to spending the change that we've accumulated. What we decided to do was see how much this actually amounts to over a period of time.
Our first time frame was 3 months. We would gather all the change (as we normally would) and at least once a week do a "walk through" and collect it to put in a jar. We soon realized (about 2 weeks into this) that a mason jar was just not big enough. I graduated to a large canister (old popcorn tin), and my husband graduated to a large soup pan (don't know what else to call it really - it's a 6 quart blue speckled thing with a lid). We also agreed that if bills were left in pants, shirts, jackets, etc. when that was found we'd put it in our coin collections. I will tell you that I do not often "lose" bills - I know how many I have and since I carry a bag they're always in there, but it seems that men sometimes forget a bill in a pocket of jeans or the like and it ends up in the wash. At the end of the first 3 months we count the bills and roll the coin, and had almost $400 between the two of us. Now boys and girls that's a lot of change! We were so excited that we saved this much in just 3 months without having to actually think about it that we decided we didn't really have anything pressing so we'd simply continue.
We're at 6 months now, and had almost $1000. We deposited that to our savings account, and decided it'd be used for a vacation once he retires, along with whatever else we have saved up between now and the 1st of the year.
It's amazing to me how quickly this adds up. I'm not even sure what I used to do with it before. I know that from time to time I'd have a whole collection of coins and drop them into a CoinStar machine, which charges you a small amount (ok so it's like 8%) and then use that money toward my weekly grocery bill, and when one of the older kids would come by I'd simply sweep all the change off the counter or out of my purse to give them a little "gas money surprise", but really.....that was a lot of money and I had absolutely no idea!
This is just one of our little ways of saving a little bit, without really feeling it. It's easy to do and it adds up quickly!

Heads Up!!
I hate doing this to you all, but..........
My deployed husband is more than likely returning to the States on Friday. He'll be a short car ride from me until Sunday night - so I plan on leaving here Friday morning to greet him before he leaves Sunday night back to his duty station in California.
I'll put up as many sneak peek's as I can get my hands on tonight and tomorrow - but the "finalized" versions won't post to the website until most likely Monday. (I plan on staying absolutely as long as I possibly can)

Savings Spreadsheet
Want an easy to use spreadsheet that does all the calculations for you?
All you have to do is type in what your OOP was, then type in what your savings was and the rest is calculated!
This is a google doc that you can find here.
As a quick reference - sign in to google doc's (or create an account if you need to) then go to file > download > and choose Excel. Once that pops up then hit file > save as > and choose a file location and name for your spreadsheet.
For those not used to working inside spreadsheets - in the column that says "spent" and the column that says "saved" you can type an = sign FIRST then the $ amount you spent or saved at a particular store. When you want to add another store to the week just click on the cell - in the address bar up top you'll see it says =2.00 (if you had typed 2.00 in the cell) ..... put a + after the 2.00 (no spaces required) and type the next value (you have to do this in the address bar) and hit enter. It will do the addition for you this way too!
It's a quick way to keep track of what you're spending and saving week over week....so you can watch that savings % grow and become excited. It also does year to date calculations for you and puts them right at the top of the spreadsheet!
