But it's sooooo early......

I now know I've officially lost my mind!

23 years ago I decided to have kids.  Not a bad idea!  I had no idea at that time I'd decide that 7 sounded like a well rounded number.  (that thought came much later - along with the laundry, grocery bill, clothing bills, etc.)  Jump forward to the decision to marry my awesome husband......that too sounded wonderful!  I mean every girl wants to marry her hero - right?  And mine wears combat boots!  We thought this year we were "safe" from deployments........that's what we get for thinking!

So here we are today - I went to bed at 11 PM last night after baseball practice for the teenage son, running the 2 teenage girls over to see my niece's new baby, doing 2 loads of laundry, putting dishes in the dishwasher that can never seem to find their way there without my help, and cleaning up the mud left on the wood floor after my teenage son decided to pound his baseball cleats clean in the middle of the dining room.

My deployed husband often calls at 12:30am - there's quite a time difference and that's when he usually can grab a phone for a few minutes to talk......so after sleeping an hour I'm up to catch up on the occurrences of the day/weekend with my hubby then it's back to bed at 1:15.

I then start the day at 5:00 AM this week - rather than 6 AM because I've made this new commitment to myself to get more exercise.  (again - another great idea at the time turned into a "huh?!" moment later)  And since I clearly can't fit it into the schedule after work, it has to go in before.  So here I am, blogging before my 3 mile walk/jog with my sister.  I'll get home just in time to grab a shower before the kids get up and start getting ready for the day, which is good - because 3 teenagers getting ready for school somehow seems to empty the hot water tank in no time, and using a bathroom for the hour and a half before school is next to impossible. (I meantioned 2 of them are teenage girls right?  I do not remember ever primping as much as these girls do now)

Maybe I can squeeze in a nap during the 45 minutes I have to wait between the time my son has to be at his ball game and the time the game starts tonight!

How do you manage your work/life balance?  Do you work exercise in there somewhere?  Anyone know how to get 8 hours of sleep in 4??  :-)

BenGay

So.........recently I've started this new exercise regime and it seems that I'm really more out of shape than I thought I was.  (Ok so maybe I went with the "round is a shape" for wayyyy too long!)

However - no need to worry - RiteAid has a deal for us this week!

Buy 1 Bengay Cream $5.49
Use the $3/1 coupon from the 5/22 RP
Use the $2/1 in-ad coupon
Final Cost $0.49!

I know we all just stocked up on the Tylenol Precise a couple weeks ago - but at the rate I'm going I think I'm going to use my stockpile of pain relief in no time!

Gotta run - well not literally - I'm off to RiteAid before my morning walk!  :-)

Saving without coupons

What ways do you save on your household expenses without the use of coupons?

Recently I did a little math on my coffee addiction - this was not pretty.  I was spending over $1000 a year on "to go" latte from Dunkin Donuts.....so I decided I'd just stop - no more latte's for me!  UUGGHHHH - that was the worst hour of my life!  (kidding - it was a whole day)  I then stopped at a local Speedway for gas on the way to work one day, and decided to go in (which I never do) to grab a soda.  What did I see?  Latte' in their machines and they were CHEAP!  The same 16 ounce size I pay $3.00 for at DD was only $0.99, and everytime  you buy 6 you get the 7th FREE.  I was estatic.  I didn't have to totally give up Latte' - I could just switch to a cheaper version (which by the way is much tastier too - so bonus) and save $600 a year but still enjoy my morning joe.

Anyone else have one of these "aha" moments??  A point in time where the true cost of doing something you wouldn't normally think twice about smacks you upside the head.  I have to work on lunch now - I usually go out every day at work - think of the $$ I could save packing my own!!

Happy Monday............

I won't be posting anything today until late tonight.

I am starting a 6 month Personal Excellence Program at work, and will be in the "orientation" meeting all day today.  I'll get out of there just in time to head to baseball practice.....maybe my son won't mind me dropping him off and running to Rite Aid :-)

Been a Long Day!!

It sure has been a very long day today!

I got up early, ran and got my newspapers and coffee.  Came back home, cleaned up using free body wash, free shampoo, free toothpaste and toothbrush, free deodorant, and almost free make-up, then ran to see my new great niece before the day got away from me.  It was 10:30 by the time I got home (putting down a new baby is soooo darn hard!!) - got laundry started and my Q's clipped and organized.

My hubby called - he's deployed right now so those calls are important - and he had more than 5 minutes to chat - so there went another hour.

4 more loads of laundry, the grass mowed, dishes in the dishwasher and washed (why can't kids put the dishes IN the dishwasher??)  and hubby calls again.  Wow - two times in one day and he wasn't in a hurry!

So.........to make a long story short - I broke the "no eating out month" rule and we went out to eat.  1st time in 22 days - which is awesome for us (we usually eat out no less than 2 times a week just due to busy schedules)  ((ok ok - and laziness on my part to actually do a meal plan and stick with it))

Quick trip to WalMart to grab some powerade (it's baseball season and we use tons of this) and an outfit for each of the kids ..... well ok just 3 of the 4 that still live at home, the 3 that don't live at home are on their own - LOL.

I didn't get any shopping done today :(  Oh well.....there's always tomorrow - so long as the shelves aren't cleared of everything I'm hoping to get!

REMINDER

No Inserts in the 5/29/11 papers.  It's a Holiday Sunday!!

I know if I'm not reminded I end up getting a bunch of papers for no reason........and there goes all that savings - LOL.

Eckrich Franks - HOT deal!!

$0.88 per pack at VG's this week.  Limit 4!

Taking a Short Break

I will have this weeks confirmed sales and match ups up soon.  My niece had her baby though, so I'm taking a little break to run to the hospital  and see the beautiful little girl in person!

Check This Out!!

SavingStar is a new program that allows you to link your store cards to their electronic coupon database.  It doesn't only work for CVS, but here in MI it works for Rite Aid and Kroger as well!  How cool is that?

Please note:  you do not get the electronic Q off your total bill - but instead it gets put into an account at SavingStar and you can choose how you get paid (i.e. Amazon Gift Cards , transfers to your paypal account, etc.) once your account hits $5.00.

It's new - been in the test markets for about 30 days I'm hearing, but I signed up today and will let you all know how quickly those Q's add up.

I wish I had found this earlier today when I was purchasing the Huggies at Rite Aid - there's $2.00 electronic Q for those and I'd have my first $2.00....bummer!

It takes 2 days to 2 weeks, per their FAQ page, to get credit to your account for your purchases.  I'm going to keep track of the purchases I'm using the SavingStar Q's on to make sure they are adding properly and see how long they take - but thought I'd throw this out there now so that you all can get in on this sooner than later!

I'm also told you can stack your regular MQ's with the SavingStar Q's - what a deal!!

Quick Run to VG's.....almost forgot!!

So I was sitting here going over my week and realized that I forgot to make my VG's run!  Not exactly what I wanted to do at 8:30 at night - but hey.....it was worth it!

4 Sunny Delight's
8 Miracle Whip (not the small one's either!)
1 Luigi's Frozen Ice (yep - been in the sun all day and the kids needed a treat)
1 Red Baron French Bread Pizza's
2 Jello Pudding 8 packs

Total before savings and Q's - $75.78
Used 4 $0.25/1 Sunny D Q's
Used 4 $1.00/2 Miracle Whip Q's
Used 2 $0.55/1 Jello Q's
Used 1 $1.00/1 Red Baron Q (this was a DND)
Used 1 $0.50/1 Luigi's Q
Total OOP - $16.46
Total Savings:  79%

Whose Ready???

Got your lists ready for tomorrow?  I'll be up bright and early so I can get my papers, get my Q's organized, and post the final deals for you (hopefully all before 10:00 a.m. - I have lofty goals LOL).

Tonight I'm working on moving my Q's from my "small" binder to a larger one.  The one I've been using I absolutely love, but unfortunately I've outgrown it and am now using 2 binders, which is a hassle to carry into the stores, then trade back and forth when you need a HBA Q (cause all those are in their own binder right now).  I'm nervous - I'll be the 1st to admit - so that's why I "experimented" with the second binder before committing!  The one I use now I got from Mrs. A's and it has these wonderful little "rails" that the coupons sit in - so you don't have to worry about trying to squeeze them in baseball card slots or anything like that - now I'm moving up to a Case-It  with baseball card holders and 4x6 picture pages.  The trial run wasn't bad - so hopefully I can get used to it quickly.

I'm also working on building a database to do the match ups quicker, keep an inventory of my Q's, and keep an inventory of my stockpile.  That's proving to be a little more challenging than I initially thought - but hey.... it'll be worth it in the end.  (it's a program - not a spreadsheet - so there's some programming involved which is where I'm struggling from time to time - but it's good to have another "IT Geek" in the family!)

Forums

It is my opinion that everyone that is trying to coupon as a way to save money should join at least one forum, as well as following your favorite bloggers!

I have found a wealth of information in forums.  It's a terrific place to ask questions, get coupon match ups (i.e. someone else does the work for you!), find printable coupons, etc.

I am a member of multiple forums - but my favorite of all time, and one I am highly addicted to, is WeUseCoupons.  Here you can find not only match ups and deals of the week, there is a huge coupon database where you can find any coupon you may be needing, and a ton of people with a wealth of knowledge to help you along the way.  I could spend hours every day on this site (ok sometimes I do)!

I encourage you to join now, if you haven't already!  You can either click on the embedded link in the paragraph above, or I've placed a link to the left of the page for easy access!  When you do join please mention that stretchthatdollar sent you!

Oh - the best part??  It's FREE!  That's right!!  You can get all the deal match ups, links to coupons, tips, and advice on everything from the best coupon organization systems (including binders and how to set them up), to store policies!  So.....what are you waiting for??  Sign up today - and after you've signed up, and mentioned that stretchthatdollar sent you, please send me a friend request!

See you there soon!!

Inventory Control

Anyone have trouble with "inventory control" with kids in the house?

My stockpile (which is in multiple locations) is easy access.  HBA items are in the bathroom under the sink, food items are in a closet, cleaning products in a different closet....etc.

The issue - the kids see something added to the stockpile and get "excited" and want to use something new/different.  I've repeatedly removed shampoo and bath wash from the shower because there are already2 or 3 bottles of each in there.  The cereal cabinet is has 7 (I'm not kidding - 7!) open boxes right now, and they're not all different!

Tonight I moved the HBA stuff to my bedroom closet (it's a huge walk-in), but it will have to be moved yet again in a month or two when I start getting the house ready for my huband to come home.  (I'm thinking he's going to want his shelves and drawers!)  I bought the Vive Shampoo's on sale tonight at a really, really good price - and before the kids went to bed there was already a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of the conditioner in the shower.  (which I removed until they finish the other stuff we have in the shower already - uuggghhhh)

How do you control your inventory?  I'm thinking I might have to get as possessive with my stockpile as I am with my binder.......NOBODY touches the binder LOL!

Save A Lot this week

Johnsonville Brats - $2.99

Sunny Delight - $0.99

Popsicle / Fudgecicle 8ct - $1.00

Look for your brats and Sunny D coupons that match up with these items!

Taken over.........

My stockpile has taken over it's closet!

I've had it in a small 8' wide x 3' deep closet for the last 9 months or so, with shelves attached to the walls, but those shelves are full - the floor is full and stacked up to the bottom of the first row of shelves - and the shelves are stacked to the ceiling!

Time to move it to it's own room I'm afraid!  My hubby retires from the Air Force in November, and money will be tight until he can get a job here in MI - so I want to make sure we have a good supply to hold us if we need it, but...........I have to come up with a plan or the next time he's home he's gonna think I've lost my mind and call that other TLC show "the hoarders" on me!

Anyone else experiencing/experienced this??

I'm on a mission.................

I'm thinking about starting a series for saving money in ways other than coupons!

For instance - I changed my cell phone provider 3 months ago and dropped my bill from over $300 a month to $170 a month.  That's $1500+ a year right there!  (there's 5 phones on that bill - LOL)

I'm looking for other ways to cut household expenses now - such as looking into switching from the cable company we currently have to a dish provider (who is offering some great deals right now if you sign a 2 year contract), reviewing insurance policies (homeowners, car, life) to see if I can get the same coverage for lower rates, changing banks.....which is a hard one for me cause I've been with this bank 20 years to save on monthly fee's, etc.

I'll start a new page for these items so I don't muck up all the couponing stuff if that's what you're here for.  That way if you're interested you can look.....if you're not you don't need to weed through the stuff to find what you're wanting!

Please feel free to make this a collaborative effort - I am by no means an expert in this field, but really need to get the bills down to a reasonable level before my husband retires and we're living on 50% of his pay until he finds a job!  Comment on posts - or if you have ideas that you'd like to guest blog please e-mail them to me at dollarstretcher1001@yahoo.com for inclusion!

Thanks!!

This is Realistic Shopping - 63% savings at Kroger

As I was walking out to my car from my trip to Kroger, a little disappointed that I didn't do better so I'd have something to "brag" about here, I realized that last week I told you my perception of realistic couponing, however I have not been posting the realistic side of my trips.  Yes - I post the 70%+ or the 80%+ savings - I've even posted a couple 100% saving trips - but never once have I posted the "average" trip.

So here goes - I'm not really proud and don't feel I did that well today - but I did get things that we WANTED rather than just things I had coupons for!

Here's what I got:

1 box of Ice Cream Sandwiches
2 boxes of Cocoa Krispies
2 boxes of Ritz Bitz sandwiches
2 boxes of Pepperidge Farms Popovers (for dessert tomorrow night)
2 packages of Chips Ahoy
2 Purina busy bones
6 Boxes of Ronzoni Pasta
4 Bags of Sunflower Seeds (these were on sale for $1.00 and it's baseball season - we pay $2.49 at the
     local 7-11)
4 Kraft BBQ sauce
4 Powerade
2 Gatorade
2 Frito's
1 Martha Stewart coffee cake mix
6 2 ltrs of Pepsi
2 packages of Eckrich Sausage

Total before Kroger Savings and Coupons:  $96.97
Paid:  $36.38
TOTAL SAVINGS:  63%

So while I was disappointed I didn't do better - I think I still did ok.  I didn't get the Eckrich Hot Dogs I went for (10/$10 ending today) since they were out - but got a raincheck for when they do restock, and they're on sale this week at Meijer so all is good!

So there you have it......it's not a 90%+ savings trip - but it's still not a bad trip in my opinion!

Kroger Reminder

I've been told they changed their coupon policy and you can no longer "stack" the electronic coupons on your card with a MQ.

So what I've done today is remove all electronic coupons from my card.  As I'm putting together the deals I will let you know if you should grab an electronic coupon and add it to your card, or use one that you have in your binders.

Just don't want you running into any hassle when you get to the store....like my girlfriend did!

Realistically Speaking

Do you have the "Coupon Craze" that has been started recently due to some television programming?

First - I think that we all need to remember that this is television, so it's likely not showing you exactly what the reality of couponing is.  It has indeed brought to light the value in couponing, but it has also brought with it the dark side of couponing, and potentially given some viewers some unrealistic expectations.

Do you expect to pick up a newspaper this weekend, clip your coupons, and head to the grocery store to save 90%?  If so I can't help you!

However, if you want to consistently save 50% or more on your grocery bill I can help!

First - if you haven't already read the "How Do I Get Started?" post please do!  Getting started takes time.  Don't expect a 50% savings week 1.  Don't even expect a 50% savings on week 2!  It takes a while to build up your savings, but you will consistently start to save a little more each week on your grocery bill, and be able to pick up some HBA items along the way for FREE!

You will need to devote some time to couponing each and every week.  The typical shopper will probably spend about 45 - 60 minutes clipping coupons and getting their lists together for their weekly trips, depending on how many stores you plan to shop at.

I do not have 60 - 70 hours a week to devote to couponing....what about you?  I am an Air Force wife, mom of 7 (for which 4 still live at home), and I work full-time.  I coupon in my "free time".  My time is worth something, and I will not take time away from my family for couponing.

You will not notice a huge increase in the amount of time that you are spending at the store.  It only takes a couple minutes to pull coupons out of your binder as you're putting items in your cart, and a few minutes to scan the coupons.  Most of the work is done before you leave the house!

To keep your time to a minimum, follow coupon sites that match up deals for you, like mine.  Another site you may be interested in, especially if you live outside of Michigan, is WeUseCoupons.  If you sign up on their site be sure to let them know stretchthatdollar invited you!  All you have to do now is visit my site, or the site of your choice, and read through the deal match ups that have already been put together for you and make your own shopping list from these match ups.

While we're being realistic, who needs enough toilet paper to last 20 years?  Who wants a stockpile of 100+ bags of diapers if there's nobody in your home who wears them?  Who has room to store that??  I know I don't.  I do, however, have a stockpile.  Right now my stockpile includes 96 rolls of toilet paper - enough for about 3 months in my house.  I do not have 100 deodorants, or body washes, or anything like that.  My deodorant stockpile stands are 10 today, and with 6 of us that is just about 60 days worth....maybe.  I buy what I know we will be using for the next 3 months, knowing that the sales cycle, and I will be able to get another sale again in a couple months to restock.  If I happen across a sale and don't need it to restock my stockpile for the next 3 months I will still pick it up, but those items will be donated to one of multiple organizations I am a fan of!

You still with me?  Good!  That means you're serious about saving money, and your bubble hasn't been popped by my "realistic view" of couponing!  I'm not Debbie Downer - really!  I just don't want you thinkig that you're going to visit my site, or any other site for that matter, and walk out tomorrow saving 90% on your bill, then being disappointed and giving up!  You will save money - and you will have those incredible trips.....just not everytime out!

How Do I Get Started?

I've been asked repeatedly by complete strangers, friends, and family.......How Do I Get Started?

It's easy really - pick up a Sunday newspaper!  Ok that seems like a no-brainer right?  But you absolutely can not coupon if you do not have coupons!  So it's important to get your collection going!

I buy 5 newspapers minimum each week.  Now that may seem like a lot for some of you, and it might well be.  I've always went with the rule of one paper per person living in the house.  That means come November when my husband retires from the Air Force and moves back here to Michigan I'll be buying 6.  (I make him buy his own and get the coupons right now)  This allows you to get enough coupons to buy multiples of the FREE items, or next to FREE items, so that you can start a stockpile.  I'm not a huge stockpile person, but I have a pretty decent stockpile going right now.  (I'll post my stockpile contents in a separate post)

Get organized!  Another no-brainer?   One would think - but for the longest time I thought I could simply clip the coupons, pile them up, grab the pile and head to the grocery store and expected to save money.  And I did save a little, but nothing to write home (or a blog) about!  If you can't find the coupon quickly you're going to HATE couponing!  You need a binder!  I tried the little coupon wallets, I tried envelopes, and eventually I gave in an got a binder.  I don't know what I did without it, and quite honestly I save way more now that I have it.  My shopping trips take less time too!

Start small.  Don't think that you're going to grab a Sunday paper this week and then hit the local grocery store and save 90%.  You will not be able to shop like the women and men on Extreme Couponers week over week.  Keep in mind they're on television, and they're all doing their biggest haul ever, so they don't get those results all the time, and you shouldn't expect to either.

Find a place to get information from quickly.  Coupon match-ups are hard to do - especially if you're just starting out.  The last thing you need to worry about is the math behind a coupon!  Sites like Stretch that Dollar (where you are now) or WeUseCoupons are a great place to get a lot of information in a little time.  (hey if you do sign up on WeUseCoupons remember to tell them that stretchthatdollar sent you!)  We do the work for you - so all you have to do is grab your binder, print a list, and head to the store.

Never leave home without it!  There's lots of things some of us never leave home without....our cell phones, wallets, credit cards, lipstick, etc.  Add your coupon binder to that "never leave home without it" list!  I keep mine in a bag so when I pick up my purse to head out I pick up my bag that has my binder, scissors, sale ads for the week, etc. as well.  That way if I'm called on the way home for an "emergency" stop to get ice cream, milk, a protractor (yep - that actually happened just this week) I have my coupons with me and if I happen to run across a great deal I can pick it up.  (Remember to check the clearance section of EVERY store you're in EVERY time you're in it!)

Above everything else don't get discouraged.  There will be scissor accidents, missing inserts from your newspaper because some inconsiderate person went through and took them out but only bought 1 paper, paper cuts, unfriendly cashiers, people that look at you like you have 3 heads when you walk into the store carrying a binder full of coupons and pick up a protractor, math errors, etc.  It's going to happen.  It happens to the best of us.  Just keep your head up, know that you're on the right track, and keep plugging away!

Coups For Troops

Have expired coupons you don't know what to do with?

Did you know that Military families stationed overseas can use expired coupons for up to 6 months after the expiration date of the coupon?

Want an easy way to get the coupons to a Military family that can really use them?  Check out CoupsForTroops on Facebook and they'll take care of the mailing hassle for you!  Just send them your coupons (please remember to separate them into food and non food groups (rubber band them, put them in separate envelopes, whatever)) and they'll send them to families that can use them.

Military families stationed overseas often times have very few options for buying food.  The commissary is usually their best choice, and prices overseas are more expensive than here in the States - so let's help the men and women who fight for our freedom save a few bucks!

Who Am I?

Hi everyone!!

I am an Air Force wife (and a relatively new one at that).  My husband and I have 7 kids total, and a grandbaby!

My husband and I were born 8 hours apart, in the same hospital.  I tease him often that he kept me awake with his crying in the nursery!  After our short 3 day stay (yes - this was back in 1969 when they kept you for 3 days and allowed you to rest before shipping you home with a newborn that doesn't sleep) in that hospital we didn't meet again until 7th grade.  We both played in the band (I played clarinet, bass clarinet, and percussion - depending on what the season was and he played saxophone) and were friends from that time through graduation from high school when we went our own ways, got married (to other people) and had kids.

My kids are 22, 20, 13, 13, and 11.  His are 21 and 18.  I was a single mom for 10 years before Brett and I reconnected through Facebook!

There was an immediate "re-attraction", and while he lived in California and I in Michigan we developed quite a friendship over the course of a couple months.  He came home for Christmas and things haven't been the same since!

We continued dating, and less than 10 months after that 1st face-to-face meeting (just before Christmas 2009) we were married on 10-01-10.

I work full-time as a Project Manager for a bank here in Michigan.  Being the only parent in the house (until November when hubby retires) I am constantly running - baseball practice, band concerts, school functions, the "I need this tonight" trips, etc.. In my "free time" I coupon - search for upcoming deals, match up my coupons, and get ready to get the next weeks deals!  I am also an avid reader, and although I don't watch TV much I do have a couple shows that I watch every week that I never miss an episode of!  (Thank you to whomever invented DVR)

I have couponed for years.  I haven't always been this serious about it, and have really become addicted to finding the best deal.

I am not your typical "Extreme Couponer" that you see on the TLC show.  I do not steal papers from driveways, I do not get into dumpsters for coupons, and I have never cleared a shelf.  I do have a stockpile that has taken over my closet as well as several cupboards in the bathroom, and will soon be moving it to its own room (we have an extra one - YAY!).

I have had several trips where my total OOP was $0.00, but not hundreds of them for sure!  My typical savings on a grocery trip (i.e. Kroger, Meijer, VG's) is 70%+, so I think I do a pretty good job, and my kids get food they want to eat!

I do this as a hobby, and because I think it's utterly ridiculous to not use coupons and pay full price for something that if you clipped a coupon you could get for much less!  I have family members tell me how crazy I am and that my time is worth something.....well they're right - it's worth 70% of my grocery bill each week, and a whole bunch of free products!

I believe in ethical couponing - so I will not be posting ideas on how to get coupons that you're not entitled to, how to use a coupon for a product it's not intended for, etc.  What you will find on this blog is a way to consistently save money week over week on your grocery bill.

I sincerely hope you enjoy reading about the deals I find, and that you recommend this page to your friends!  You can also like me on facebook and follow the deals there!

Walgreens and CVS sneak peeks are coming up tonight for 5/15!  Working on the match ups right now!

Where do you find your best match ups?

Sure - we can all sit down with our flyers and inserts and match up deals ourselves.  But....that takes a lot of time, and with 4 kids at home still, working a full time job, and trying to keep the laundry done I don't have as much time as some to find my deals.

I find a lot of match ups, and save a ton of time, by using WeUseCoupons

What site do you use to find the deals you're gonna get this week?

Sales for 5/15

Looks like there's going to be some decent sales next weekend!

I know, at least for me, that there wasn't much I was wanting to run right out to get this week, so I've started my research a little early!

I'll have the 5/15 Rite Aid sales (or rumored sales if you will) up later tonight - soon as I get home from baseball practice!  I'll then post the rest of them as I get my hands on them.

But.........for those that are curious as to what might be included in the 5/15 Rite Aid sale - Purex is $1.97 for the 50oz bottle, Huggies Little Swimmers $7.00, Sally Hansen cosmetics & beauty tools are buy one get one 50% off - and there's a $3.00 UP Reward on $10.00 purchase.

I'll do the match ups (during practice) and get the list out to you - which will have many more items included!

How Do You Get All Those Coupons???

I had a cashier ask me yesterday how I got all my coupons.  Now I just have a smaller sort of binder, and there's probably 4000 coupons in it - if only she could see my desk!  :-)

I have my binder that I carry everywhere, but I also have a "stockpile" of coupons that aren't in my binder.  I typically know if I have a coupon for something, and most of the time can tell you exactly how much it's worth....whether in my binder or not.

So how do I get all those coupons?

Well I buy multiple weekly papers.  The # of papers I purchase depends on the coupon inserts that are included that week.  I also print coupons every chance I get from every site I can print them from.

Printed coupons are accepted almost everywhere.  Of the 9 stores I frequent most often only 1 of them does not accept printed coupons, and that is a new policy they put in place about a month ago - so I don't shop there as often anymore either.

Find your favorite online coupon printer and use it routinely.  Keep in mind most will let you print the coupon only twice - so you're going to need to find multiple sites or use multiple computers to get more than 2 coupons for a product.

Inside this blog there are some links for printable coupons.  I usually have a page called "printable coupons" that will take you to specific coupons I've mentioned in articles, and I've also let some advertising take place on my page which is content specific so they're usually coupon sites too.

Also - let me reiterate that if you're not already a member of an online coupon forum, such as WeUseCoupons or CouponMom, then you need to be!  Both sites are free to join!  If....no when....you sign up be sure to tell them that you heard about them through stretchthatdollar!

Once you sign up let me know if you have questions.  Both of the databases are huge, and offer lots of information, which may be overwhelming at first!  But they're fun to use and addicting.......and sooo worth the couple minutes it takes to sign up and get started!

I don't dumpster dive - the recycle containers here have very specific language on them that scares me - so I stay out!  I don't need the hassle with the law for coupons.  I do like to save, therefore hiring an attorney because I was digging through a recycle bin isn't worth it for me personally.

I do check the local coffee shops when I stop for coffee in the morning - lots of times people have purchased a paper, enjoyed their coffee, and left the paper sitting when they left.  I also have some friends that do not coupon that save their coupons for me - which is a bonus too.  From time to time, when there's a very specific coupon out that I want quite a few of I will purchase them from online coupon clipping services - but those times are few and far between.

My stockpile has taken over a closet, 2 bathroom cabinets, and headed to the bedroom - so I do well with what coupons I do get.  I'm not in this to clear shelves or anything like that - just get the best deal I can get and save my family some money doing it.

If you have questions, need to know where to get a coupon from, can't figure out how to navigate a site, etc. please don't hesitate to contact me!

Things My Mother Taught Me

Since it's Mothers Day I thought I'd share a little something I received in an e-mail.  The author of this piece is unknown....probably because they didn't want their mom finding out they wrote it!  :-)

How many of these do we "teach" our kids these days?  There's quite a few in here that I know I teach on a daily basis, and after reading them I've decided that I am becoming my mother!

                                              THINGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME

My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE - "If you're going kill each other, do it outside - I just finished cleaning the house!"

My mother taught me RELIGION - "You better pray that will come out of the carpet."

My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL - "If you don't sort yourself out, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week"

My mother taught me LOGIC - "Because I said so, that's why."

My Mother taught me LOGIC...#2 - "If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you're not going shopping with me."

My mother taught me FORESIGHT - "Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident."

My mother taught me IRONY - "Keep crying and I'll give you something to cry about."

My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS - "Shut your mouth and eat your dinner!"

My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM - "Will you "look" at the dirt on the back of your neck!"

My mother taught me about STAMINA - "You'll sit there 'till all that spinach is finished."

My mother taught me about WEATHER - "It looks as if a tornado swept through your room."

My mother taught me how to solve PHYSICS PROBLEMS - "If I yelled because I saw a meteor coming toward you, would you listen THEN?"

My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY - "If I've told you once, I've told you a million times - Don't Exaggerate!!!">

My mother taught me THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out."

My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION - "Stop acting like your father!"

My mother taught me about ENVY - "There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do!"

My Mother taught me about ANTICIPATION -  "Just wait until we get home."

My Mother taught me about RECEIVING - "You are going to get it when we get home!"

My Mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE - "If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they are going to stick that way."

My Mother taught me to THINK AHEAD - "If you don't pass your spelling test, you'll never get a good job."

My Mother taught me ESP - "Put your sweater on; don't you think I know when you're cold?"

My Mother taught me HUMOR - "When that lawnmower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me."

My Mother taught me how to BECOME AN ADULT - "If you don't eat your vegetables, you'll never grow up."

My Mother taught me about GENETICS - "You're just like your father."

My Mother taught me about my ROOTS - "Do you think you were born in a barn?"

My Mother taught me about WISDOM OF AGE - "When you get to be my age, you will understand."

And my all time favorite... JUSTICE - "One day you'll have kids ...and I hope they turn out just like you!"

FREE? Off Repellent

Rumor has it that some WalMarts have off in a 2.5oz can (back in their trial and travel section) for $0.75 a can.

You can go to http://www.coupons.com/ and get a coupon for $0.75 cents off - which makes this free if your WalMart has the trial sized cans at this price.

You may need to use zip code 33031 to find the off coupon.  I know it's not in any of the 3 zip codes where I have a residence (48329, 94534, 99501) - but I did find it under 33031.

How did I hear about this great deal?  Glad you asked!  I've been telling you all for days that if you haven't already you really need to sign up for We Use Coupons, tell them stretchthatdollar sent you, and be amazed at what you'll find.  Freebies, coupons to exchange, printables, deal ideas, helpful hints, etc.  Well worth the couple minutes it takes to sign up!  You can click on the link to the right of this page, or click on the embedded link above!  Either way - you should really do it and remember to tell them I sent you!

Tomorrow's inserts......updated

Rumor has it that the 2nd insert that is supposed to be in tomorrow's papers will not be included.....which is probably why I haven't been able to find out what coupons are included in the mysterious insert!

So........earlier this week I posted what is included in the 1 insert....check the list before you buy too many papers to make sure that's what you want to do!

Do you Excel??

I have to admit......I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to spreadsheets!!  Oh - you thought I was referring to Excel as in being really good at something?  :-)

I love spreadsheets!  I use them for everything!!  Here's how I make the most of my couponing using spreadsheets.

Spreadsheet #1 - I use this spreadsheet to list the items on sale, the number I want to buy, the regular price, the sale price, what coupons I have for the items, what "rewards" are being offered (i.e. ECB's, RR's, UP rewards, etc.), my out of pocket (oop) cost, the final price per item, and the total price for the # of that particular item I'm purchasing.  It also has a column for total % off, and the bottom totals the oop, final cost, total price, and % of savings.  I have one for each trip I'm going to make.  If I'm going to do multiple transactions I will usually use one spreadsheet but put a border around each individual transaction to make it easy to determine what goes with what.

Spreadsheet #2 - This is my price book.  I keep a list of regular prices on items I purchase most often for the different stores I shop at.  It's not every item in every store - but enough that if I want to quickly determine if my favorite shampoo is on sale this week for a good price or not I can do so.  I have multiple tabs inside this Excel workbook for the different stores.

Spreadsheet #3 - This one tracks my savings to date....by month.  There's one spreadsheet for each year - each spreadsheet has 12 tabs.  I like to see my savings add up month over month so I know exactly how much I saved at any given point.  This simply tracks my regular price, total oop price, and % of savings.

I find that spreadsheet #1 helps me stay organized and ensures I get the deals I think I'm going to get.  #2 helps me figure out what is really a good deal, and what "deals" I should pass up and wait on a better sale.  And #3 keeps me excited and motivated!

So tell me...........do you Excel??

It's 3:00 a.m. - do you know where your coupon binder is?

Yes - I am fully aware that it's 3:00 am and most sane people are sleeping.

I'm curious though - where is your coupon binder right now?  I just realized that I am totally in love with my binder, and I sleep with it!  Yes - it's true that it's laying in bed with me in the spot where my husband should be.

No....I wasn't couponing before bed and fell asleep in the middle of it  - I place it there nightly when I'm finished looking for deals and blogging.

For a little history - I have coupon'd for years.....just not seriously.  Now I'm serious - and I have been for a year or so!  My binder has over 4000 coupons in it as well as envelopes full of coupons that wouldn't fit.  It stores my shopping lists for the week, my "ideas" for blogs, my rewards coupons (extra care bucks, register rewards, UP rewards, etc.), sale ads, coupon policies for the stores I shop at, etc.  I never leave home without it - it's always with me whether it be in the car if I'm visiting my mom or whatever, or I'm carrying it in a bag into work so that I can coupon during lunch.  I don't go into a store without it in my hand - even if I know exactly what I'm going in for.  (think about it - how many times have you ran to the store to buy "just milk" and ended up with 10 other things - or gone without coupons only to find an incredible steal had you had your coupons with you?)  YES - I'm obsessed with my binder!

Now the real question is this......my hubby is active duty Air Force.  He's currently deployed - but even when he is not we live on opposite coasts.  (he lives in California, I live in MI until he retires in November)  This works well for my binder and I - I can keep it close at all times.  What is going to happen when he comes home and decides he wants to sleep where the binder is supposed to go?  I think I'll end up with a separation anxiety disorder!

Babe - if you're reading this please don't panic!  I promise you will have a spot in our bed when you get home!!  We'll just have to make sure the binder is safe and sound where ever we decide it's new resting place is!

The 2nd best thing about being married to my husband.....

Yes - it's true that I often tease my husband that I only married him for the commissary benefit!

That was, however, before I went to my first ever case lot sale!  You wouldn't believe the deals a member of the US Armed Forces can get at a commissary case lot sale!  I was in shoppers heaven!  The case lot sale just took #1!! (ya - it's still part of the commissary benefit I know)

Of course I took my coupons - and that made me even more over the top!  I can't list prices here - because DeCA doesn't allow that - but let me tell you boys and girls I over filled my stockpile closet!!

Now if any of you are military members - check the DeCA site for the dates of your case lot sale - start stocking up your coupons (but don't fret - they even had some AWESOME coupons that went right along with their cases of stuff) and make sure you get there early!  The base here isn't very busy - but by the time I got there tonight it was already picked over, and the sale lasts 2 more days!

All that said - it's not true that the best thing about being married to my husband is the commissary benefit - although that is indeed the 2nd best thing about being married to him!  The best thing about being married to my hubby is that he's my best friend, he is the sweetest man you've ever met, he's funny, and he's sexy!  Wow ok - I just knocked the commissary down to #5!!

Busy Day.....

I know - I've been "quiet" all day!  Hard to believe for anyone who knows me!

It's been one of those extremely busy days - the kind where my husband, who is deployed, calls and I can't even talk more than 2 minutes.  Then baseball practice, a quick trip to Kroger to pick up this week's specials, and now I'm suddenly addicted to a new "social networking" site for couponers!

If you haven't already - check out WeUseCoupons.com - the site owner is Nathan from Extreme Couponing!

There's forums, and lots of advice.  Of course don't leave me - keep checking my page for quick finds on local deals as well as helpful hints - but by all means I highly recommend this site!  Oh....and if you sign up please say that smcvay recommended you!
